We are pleased to announce that we are a grand prize winner in this competition.<br />Josh Pratt and I developed Portable Docent - a Unity app that </span><span style="color:rgb(29, 33, 41); font-weight:400">combines spatial awareness and dynamic audio content to create an immersive and responsive audio experience for museum visitors. It is built using Bose AR technology. Through some fancy algorithms the app accurately tracks the portions of a painting a museum visitor is gazing at, and dynamically orchestrate ambient soundscapes and voice overs to create a rich immersive audio experience.</span></div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.evolvingtech.com/uploads/6/1/4/7/61472653/cropped-dynmicduo-img-6168_orig.png" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div>  <h2 class="wsite-content-title">About the AR Frames</h2>  <div class="paragraph">Unlike most augmented reality devices, the Bose AR Frames omit any augmented vision features. So, what in the world makes these glasses special? For one thing, they tag team with your (Android or IOS) phone. Having the phone in constant contact with the Frames opens the door to numerous kinds of uses. The Frames have speakers that project high quality sound into your ears. There's a built-in microphone. You can make and receive calls through the frames. They respond to gestures like double-tapping on the side of the frame, gesturing with a Yes motion head nod, as well as shaking your head from side to side.<br />Aside from a long lasting battery, the Frames have accelerators, gyroscopes, and magnetic compass. The Frames easily fit over regular eyeglasses. They are designed for long lasting comfort.&nbsp;</div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.evolvingtech.com/uploads/6/1/4/7/61472653/bosear-frames-img-6189_orig.png" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph">Oh, just one more thing ...&nbsp; Bose has wisely elected to incorporate the same kind of hardware sensors in the Quiet Comfort QC35 II noise cancelling headphone as well as every new headphone, like the new Bose 700. The implications of this are enormous, as there already are millions of AR capable headphones out there. And what is the cost to the Bose customer who already has an AR capable headphone? Zippo. Nada. Nothing. This translates to easy adoption and use.</div>  <h2 class="wsite-content-title">How the App Started</h2>  <div class="paragraph">The requirements for our app- Portable Docent is relatively straightforward in design, but not so simple from an implementation&nbsp;standpoint. The app has to make it easy for someone who has the Bose frames to walk up to a museum painting, look at different parts of the painting and be immersed in ambient/atmospheric soundscapes as well as listen to voice overs based on the portions of the painting that you're gazing at.<br />To make this work seamlessly requires a bit of ingenuity. The Bose Frames can accurately track orientation; so they know how much you are looking up, down, turning left or right. They don't know your physical location.&nbsp; We addressed this from a number of approaches including the use of bluetooth beacons, and using the Kinect. The challenge with these is that the setup is far too complicated. And using the Kinect there are limitations on the number of people that could be simultaneously tracked, occlusion issues, and more. We opted instead to go for a simpler approach that involves identifying a few reference points, and from there everything is automatically triangulated. No fuss. No muss. You just put on the glasses and enjoy.<br /></div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.evolvingtech.com/uploads/6/1/4/7/61472653/early-rig-img-6119-small_1_orig.jpg" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph" style="text-align:center;"><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)"><font color="#3387a2">An early rig for projecting paintings of various sizes</font></strong></div>  <div><div style="height: 20px; overflow: hidden; width: 100%;"></div> <hr class="styled-hr" style="width:100%;"></hr> <div style="height: 20px; overflow: hidden; width: 100%;"></div></div>  <h2 class="wsite-content-title">Calibration</h2>  <div class="paragraph">We developed two methods of calibration. One entails a set of geometrical computations and measurements so that a museum visitor can enter their approximate height when first starting the Portable Docent app, step inside a "<em>Listening Circle</em>" on the floor, tap to select the Listening Circle they are in and immediately begin the audio enhanced painting experience..</div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.evolvingtech.com/uploads/6/1/4/7/61472653/listencirclesmall_orig.png" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.evolvingtech.com/uploads/6/1/4/7/61472653/selectcirclesmall_orig.png" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph">Our second calibration method- Quick Mode literally takes under 10 seconds to calibrate to any painting from any viewing location.</div>  <h2 class="wsite-content-title">Audio Environment</h2>  <div class="paragraph">We have two kinds of regions, voice overs and ambient soundscapes. These region can be positioned and sized to create the desired audio experience.</div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.evolvingtech.com/uploads/6/1/4/7/61472653/inset_orig.png" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div>  <div><div style="height: 20px; overflow: hidden; width: 100%;"></div> <hr class="styled-hr" style="width:100%;"></hr> <div style="height: 20px; overflow: hidden; width: 100%;"></div></div>  <div class="paragraph">Aural information is a natural part of our environment, but audio information delivered on a device is usually separate from what we see.<br /><br /><em>Why not let the audio curate the visual?<br /><br />&#8203;</em><span style="color:rgb(29, 33, 41); font-weight:400">It's exciting to see where this technology is heading. During that weekend I built a Magic Leap application with Unity to pilot a drone purely through 14 hand gestures like the one shown here:</div><div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none" style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center"><a><img src="https://www.evolvingtech.com/uploads/6/1/4/7/61472653/flipright_orig.png" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%"></a><div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div></div></div><div class="paragraph">The drone used is an educational drone primarily designed for indoor use that is known as the Tello Drone (manufactured by Ryze).<br></div><div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none" style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center"><a><img src="https://www.evolvingtech.com/uploads/6/1/4/7/61472653/tellodronemagicleap_orig.png" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%"></a><div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div></div></div><div class="paragraph">The Tello costs about $100. They got investors to part with a lot of $$$ and pour it into a startup for a completely new kind of technology. There had to be something really compelling for this to happen. Even as the Magic Leap One has just been released into the wild, the company has made clear that this is just an interim product intended for developers, early adopters, and enthusiasts.<br /><br />So why not wait for the product to sport improved features like wider field of view, offer a wealth of Apps, and of course, become more affordable? I will answer it in two short words: <em><strong>Spatial Computing</strong></em>.<br /><br />What Magic Leap has done is to rethink computing so that the immersive environment is really as much an operating system as it is a platform for running apps. They took to heart the notion of seamlessly melding the virtual created content with the real world so that the two are not perceived separately. In that sense, the term MR for Mixed Reality (or as I sometimes think, "Melded" Reality) is more appropriate for the Magic Leap than AR or XR.<br /><br />Instead of extolling the virtues or ranting about the product or technology, I'd like to delve into some of the ideas behind Magic Leap, why you should take interest in it, and where it may go.&nbsp;</div>  <div><div style="height: 20px; overflow: hidden; width: 100%;"></div> <hr class="styled-hr" style="width:100%;"></hr> <div style="height: 20px; overflow: hidden; width: 100%;"></div></div>  <div class="paragraph"><strong><font size="4" color="#24678d">This is not your father's VR gear</font></strong></div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.evolvingtech.com/uploads/6/1/4/7/61472653/model-img-4962_orig.png" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph">At first glance you may think Magic Leap is out to make a fashion statement. Perhaps it is, but the statement has to do with functional design. To begin with, you'll notice the visor is positioned above and not over the ears. There are several reasons for this. Magic Leap incorporates builtin headphones that can take advantage of&nbsp;<a href="https://developers.google.com/resonance-audio/" target="__blank">Resonance Audio</a>, Should you prefer to use your own headphone or earbuds, you can easily do so, as the Light Pack allows you to connect a standard 3.5mm jack. There is another not so obvious benefit to having the visor extending above the ears. It permits you to comfortably blend the ambient sounds in your environment with the audio output from the Magic Leap device. In VR you want to shut out the world, but in AR having the ambient sounds as they naturally occur is a plus.</div>  <div><div style="height: 20px; overflow: hidden; width: 100%;"></div> <hr class="styled-hr" style="width:100%;"></hr> <div style="height: 20px; overflow: hidden; width: 100%;"></div></div>  <div class="paragraph"><strong style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)"><font color="#24678d" size="4">Input, Sensors and Navigation</font></strong><br /></div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.evolvingtech.com/uploads/6/1/4/7/61472653/tech-imitates-life_orig.png" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph"><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">.It is fascinating how we so often derive from nature to inspire technology. Perhaps Magic Leap wasn't influenced by jumping spiders, but you have to admit that there's an uncanny similarity in the way biological and electronic sensors are assembled.</span><br /><br /><em><font color="#24678d">Mapping your physical space</font></em><br />First came the Tango tablet, then the Hololens and now Magic Leap. What characterizes these devices is that they know where they are in physical space. What's more, they can handle occlusion mapping dynamically. The video below shows the Magic Leap creating building a geometric mesh as you walk around. The color bands depicts the current distance from your view, and therefore the color of the mesh pattern can change as you move closer or farther away from the generated mesh.</div>  <div class="wsite-video"><div title="Video: gridmapping_646.mp4" class="wsite-video-wrapper wsite-video-height-282 wsite-video-align-center"> 					<div id="wsite-video-container-867172311648720015" class="wsite-video-container" style="margin: 10px 0 10px 0;"> 						<iframe allowtransparency="true" allowfullscreen="true" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" id="video-iframe-867172311648720015" 							src="about:blank"> 						</iframe> 						 						<style> 							#wsite-video-container-867172311648720015{ 								background: url(//www.weebly.com/uploads/gridmapping_646.jpg); 							}  							#video-iframe-867172311648720015{ 								background: url(//cdn2.editmysite.com/images/util/videojs/play-icon.png?1537488108); 							}  							#wsite-video-container-867172311648720015, #video-iframe-867172311648720015{ 								background-repeat: no-repeat; 								background-position:center; 							}  							@media only screen and (-webkit-min-device-pixel-ratio: 2), 								only screen and (        min-device-pixel-ratio: 2), 								only screen and (                min-resolution: 192dpi), 								only screen and (                min-resolution: 2dppx) { 									#video-iframe-867172311648720015{ 										background: url(//cdn2.editmysite.com/images/util/videojs/@2x/play-icon.png?1537488108); 										background-repeat: no-repeat; 										background-position:center; 										background-size: 70px 70px; 									} 							} 						</style> 					</div> 				</div></div>  <div class="paragraph"><br /><em style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)"><font color="#24678d">Mapping Hand Gestures</font></em><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">One of the features of the Magic Leap One is the ability to track hand gestures, which includes a single finger, making a fist, pinching thumb and forefinger, a thumb's up, using the forefinger and thumb to form an "L", the back of an open hand, and "OK" gesture, and forming a "C" shape. In the video you will see various hovering colorized balls. These indicate the relative positional mapping of the hand fingers and joints. As the captured video is not 3D (default video capture is from the left eye), the placement of the colorized markers don't quite match what you would see while wearing the Magic Leap.<br /><br />All these features are easily programmable, as the Magic Leap SDK provides a fairly rich and easily accessible API (Application Programming Interface).&nbsp;This API works with Unity, Unreal, and Helio- a Magic Leap web browser. I will outline this in a future blog post. For the moment, I want to stay with the theme of Magic Leap sensory input features.<br /><br />Another important aspect with Magic Leap is the ability to capture and perform data analytics. The Magic Leap API exposes internal sensor data sufficiently so I can write a program to produce a log file like the kind shown below which is from one of the sessions involving hand gesture recognition.&nbsp;</span></div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.evolvingtech.com/uploads/6/1/4/7/61472653/logfile_orig.png" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph"><br /><em style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)"><font color="#24678d">Eye of the Gazer</font></em><br /><span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">One of the modalities of user input is the ability to actively perform eye tracking. Unconscious eye gaze can influence behavior in the rendered scene. As the user glances at the cube on the right it turns red and rotates and while the user gazes at the sphere it turns green. These are simple static objects. We could also affect the animated behavior of avatars. <span style="color:rgb(42, 42, 42)">We could influence the plot line in an interactive story.&nbsp;</span>&#8203;We could create new kinds of user interfaces. We could create training software for special needs such as for recovering stroke patients. To simplify control in the VR space we decided that all user interactions would either be done through Gaze or a single tap. To provide feedback to the user that the gaze activation is working, each object that can be looked at always reacts to your gaze.</span></span><br /><br /></div>  <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.evolvingtech.com/uploads/6/1/4/7/61472653/topomap_orig.png" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div>  <div class="paragraph"><span><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)"><br />&#8203;To better capture the experience of wandering through Markthal we build a simplified model of the space. The NY Media Center, home to our company (ETC) runs a spectacular Demo Day &amp; Marketplace where it's Incubator companies get to showcase incredible innovations; ranging from slow-motion video analysis that&nbsp;reveals&nbsp;techniques of guitar virtuosos to planning your next vacation in outer space (with the aid of professional astronomers teaching science).&nbsp;There is much to see, much to try out and much to learn.</span></div>  <h2 class="wsite-content-title" style="text-align:left;">It began with a problem</h2>  <div class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><span>&#8203;My journey for Demo Day began while I was</span><span>&nbsp;participating in a&nbsp;</span><strong><a target="_blank" href="http://timewavefestival.com/hackathons.html">VR Hackathon</a></strong><span>&nbsp;held at NYU's&nbsp;</span><strong><a target="_blank" href="https://tisch.nyu.edu/itp">ITP</a></strong><span>. I was designing an App in&nbsp;</span><a target="_blank" href="http://unity3d.com/"><strong>Unity</strong></a><span>&nbsp;that plays immersive 360 degree videos on the Android platform. Unity is the gold standard in game design software. It has facilities to build, test, and analyze your games and applications.</span><br /><br /><span>Just one problem here... you're developing and testing on a desktop computer, but your target platform is a separate device; a smartphone. Although you can Play/Test your App on the desktop, it's not the same as the phone it gets installed on.</span><br /><br /><span>The big problem (and it's a showstopper) is that video content that gets rendered on a spherical texture just won't render on the desktop computer. It runs fine on the smartphone, but if you want to try playing it on the desktop all you'll see is a blank white canvas instead of the video.</span><br /><br /><span>Your only recourse is to generate your standalone App, take that file and install it on your phone and test it there. If you need to make like even the slightest tweaks, like repositioning a visual object just a tad in your virtual environment, you have to go back to your Unity system, make the changes there, and push it out to the Android platform. And it it's not quite right you have to tweak it again. This makes design and development tedious and&nbsp;</span><em>sllooow</em><span>.</span></div>  <h2 class="wsite-content-title" style="text-align:left;">An epiphany ensued</h2>  <div class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><em>An epiphany occurred. The Android phone already possesses interactive capabilities. So why not enable edit capabilities directly on the phone itself? This way you can make all the editing changes directly on the phone.</em><br /><br /><span>And this idea gave rise to our product- XpressVR, which is what we pitched at Demo Day.</span><br /><br /><span>&#8203;Originally, we were going to pitch some other cool tech we are developing related to haptics and VR. Our ongoing work with a major theme park demands that we keep it under tight wraps.</span></div>  <h2 class="wsite-content-title" style="text-align:left;">Preparing for Demo Day</h2>  <div class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">When I first heard about Demo Day at the Media Center I thought wow, this is a great opportunity to showcase some really cool things I am doing. On the first pitch rehearsal a group of fellow "Incubatees" convened at the screening room - a 72 seat auditorium. I get assigned a Pitch Mentor Doug D'Arrigo - a really uber smart guy whose marketing genius is built into his DNA. I was also given an Industry Mentor Jess Engels. It's really great to have these powerhouses covering your back.<br /><br />On the first pitch rehearsal I presented some work I was doing on haptics- a technology that brings force feedback that makes VR very immersive and real. As it would turn out; my ongoing work with a major theme park involving haptics snowballed to the point where I was no longer free to talk about my work because of its confidential nature. Well it seems for now that the only ones privy to my work on haptics is that theme park and the NSA; the first is by choice, but the second is not.<br /><br />For the second pitch rehearsal it's back to the drawing board.&#8203;</div>  <h2 class="wsite-content-title" style="text-align:left;">Meet the Demo Crew</h2>  <div class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;"><span>Before I go and describe the second rehearsal I want to say something about my peers pitching alongside me. The unfortunate thing is that this is a minority viewpoint.&nbsp;Olivia, originally a laser engineer turned storyteller is bringing science to the masses in a way that's inviting, fun, and at the same time doesn't water down the real science. So how does she do it? How does she give this new face to science? Her core ingredient is that her audience is at the very center of what's happening. We all know about lab rats and the mazes they traverse for a piece of cheese. Well what if we flipped the roles so the lab rats become the scientists, place you in a supersize maze, and instruct you to do their bidding, while they measure your memory, sense of direction or some other metric? Aside from audience involvement, she has an army of real world scientists running all sorts of fun activities - maybe plan your next vacation to out space with your travel agent being a professional astronomer. They for sure can give you the best tips on out of this world places to visit and not get sucked up by a black hole.</span></div> <hr style="width:100%;clear:both;visibility:hidden;"></hr>  <div><div style="height: 20px; overflow: hidden; width: 100%;"></div> <hr class="styled-hr" style="width:100%;"></hr> <div style="height: 20px; overflow: hidden; width: 100%;"></div></div>  <span class='imgPusher' style='float:left;height:0px'></span><span style='display: table;z-index:10;width:109px;position:relative;float:left;max-width:100%;;clear:left;margin-top:0px;*margin-top:0px'><a><img src="https://www.evolvingtech.com/uploads/6/1/4/7/61472653/606469.png?91" style="margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 10px; border-width:1px;padding:3px; max-width:100%" alt="Picture" class="galleryImageBorder wsite-image" /></a><span style="display: table-caption; caption-side: bottom; font-size: 90%; margin-top: -10px; margin-bottom: 10px; text-align: center;" class="wsite-caption"></span></span> <div class="paragraph" style="text-align:justify;display:block;"><span>Alex has designed an entirely new way to visualize and map scripts and stories visually. It runs on the iPad. I had a chance a few months earlier to view an early prototype. It totally redefines the way films, plays, TV shows, and live events can be portrayed while the planning and creation is happening. What really impressive is he got it right, because he really thought it through.</span></div> <hr style="width:100%;clear:both;visibility:hidden;"></hr>  <h2 class="wsite-content-title" style="text-align:left;">The Second Pitch Rehearsal</h2>  <div class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;">For me, because I needed to switch topics, it was pivot time. Actually the pivot wasn't too hard. I more or less knew what I wanted to cover. Challenge was that I had a lot of real technology I had to create. It's one thing to talk about an idea, but it's entirely another to have something really working rather than giving the illusion of working.<br /><br />By the way, my second pitch was truly crappy. Aside from a jumbled (I am sure mumbled or fumbled would have been an apt description), it lacked any fancy graphics or slides. It was filled with "jargonese" and had just too many superfluous topics. The tech I was creating wasn't yet given an official product name. Too many things were half-baked, but the core idea of where this technology is headed was sound and solid. I know the product I was creating would do something really significant. My software design approach was spot on.<br /><br />My idea in its simple form... <em><font color="#248d6c">the creative things like editing a VR scene should not require you to be the expert - VR editing should be as easy as playing a video game. It should virtually be like you're playing a video game.</font></em><br /><br />VR has had some great conceptual innovations but the tools and thinking for VR content creation lag far behind. You design in one environment, but you deploy and test in another. And to make a change you think you need, you go back to the first environment. Make a change. Press a button to compile that pushes possibly hundreds of megabytes through a USB cable to your smartphone that's going to run the VR App. Say some magic incantations, and maybe say a few more because you may be waiting minutes before the code can actually launch on your phone.<br /><br />This is all wrong. It is senseless. My VR device- an Android phone executes an application program written in Unity. So the program that is launched on my Android is doing a lot of processing and computing; yet I'm ignoring its capabilities for turning that processing and interactiveness on making editing changes on the phone itself.</div>  <div><div style="height: 20px;
